Tribal celebrates customers leading the way by joining Student Minds new University Mental Health Charter Programme

Posted by Ella Higham

Tribal is proud to work with the vast proportion of the first 32 universities that have recently joined Student Minds University Mental Health Charter. The team at Tribal are delighted that so many of their customers are demonstrating a commitment to improving support for staff and student mental health in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tribal Group became a partner of Student Minds, a UK-leading student mental health charity in April 2021. There are currently around 2.4 million students at UK universities, with 1 in 3 suffering clinical levels of psychological distress during these formative years. The partnership provides a unique opportunity for Tribal and Student Minds to share expertise, advice, and experiences.

In 2019, Student Minds created The University Mental Health Charter, developed with thousands of staff and students, and in partnership with a Steering Group of leading higher education organisations. The Charter was created to help shape a future in which everyone in higher education can thrive.

Providing a set of evidence-informed principles to support universities across the UK in making mental health a university-wide priority, The Charter Programme brings together universities committed to working towards these principles to share practice and create cultural change. This includes a commitment to working with staff and students to provide adequately resourced and effective support services and creating an environment and culture that reduces poor mental health and promotes good mental health for the whole university community.

Universities on the Charter Programme form part of a UK-wide practice sharing network with access to events and opportunities to come together to improve their approach to student and staff mental health. Programme members can also work towards the Charter Award, an accreditation scheme that recognises universities that demonstrate excellent practice.

Leeds Trinity University, a customer of Tribal’s student records system, SITS published a news item explaining why they are committed to the Charter programme. Toby Chelms, Head of Student Support and Wellbeing at Leeds Trinity University said:

"Since Student Minds announced the Mental Health Charter as a concept, it has inspired many new ideas across Leeds Trinity University to ensure that we focus on wellbeing within all aspects of student and staff life. As such, it made total sense that we would want to be one of the first institutions to join the Charter process now it is open for application.

As a university, we are already very conscious of the importance of embedding mental health and wellbeing across all elements of Leeds Trinity …However, we do not wish to rest on our laurels and the Charter application will be a fantastic opportunity to reflect on areas that require change as well as those that we are succeeding in."
