Tribal is delighted to launch our latest empowering education video with English Language Partners New Zealand (ELPNZ). ELPNZ are a well-regarded and successful PTE based in Wellington with 23 centres across NZ. They are a provider of English language programmes (ESOL) and settlement services to adult refugees and migrants from non-English speaking backgrounds. Their vision is that former refugees and migrants have the English skills to participate in all aspects of life in New Zealand. Over 7,000 learners are involved in the language programmes and settlement services delivered by more than 300 paid staff and 1,700 trained volunteers.
The Challenge
In 2017 ELPNZ went to market to procure a new Student Management System (SMS) provider to replace their existing SMS a Microsoft access database that had been built in 1996. The decision to procure a new provider was influenced by recently being approved to deliver TEC Student Achievement Component (SAC) funded courses which increased demands on reporting. There was also a need to improve and automate existing processes, i.e. attendance marking and reporting after consolidating separate databases at its 23 centres into one.
Specifically, ELPNZ required a Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) approved SMS provider that would provide a cloud hosted and highly configurable SMS enabling them to:
- Manage their business of delivering ESOL services to refugees and migrants in New Zealand from referrals into the service, engagement in the programmes and achievement of learning outcomes
- Report to a wide range of funders, and meet rapidly changing reporting requirements
- Evaluate the effectiveness of their services through analysis of information from the system
- Expand the use of and access to the SMS to staff - and eventually volunteers - reducing manual processes and double handling and improving the accuracy and timeliness of information.
Solution
ELPNZ recognised that Tribal understood their requirements and successfully awarded them the contract to replace their existing SMS with Tribal’s market leading ebs. Not only was the product integral in ELPNZ decision to engage Tribal, but trust and long-term partnerships were key factors. ELPNZ were looking for a long-term vendor partnership model where they would feel supported.

Following the initial go live ELPNZ, Project Manager, Nicki McLeod, said,
“The project has been a great success for ELP. As well as implementing a modern new system, we took the opportunity to change some key business processes and to eliminate manual operations. This project has been at the core of a substantial period of change for approximately 300 staff.”
“As a small dedicated project team, the relationship we had with Tribal was a significant contributor to the success of our project. Tribal were very customer focused, always quick to respond, understood our unique requirements and provided solutions that would work best for our business. We are excited about our new system and the positive impact we are now realising across our business.”
